Warninglid celebrates the Coronation of Charles III

Warninglid party in the Park May 7th 2023

Every Royal Coronation in the last 120 years has been celebrated in Warninglid and this year was no exception.

With a great deal of organisation from the WRS, and a great deal of help and volunteering across the village, a party was held on the Recreation Ground on Sunday 7th May, in full sunshine. From the youngest resident to the oldest resident, just over 300 people attended.

Marquees and lighting were erected, bunting and balloons were festooned, tables and chairs were laid out and then covered and decorated with flags and flower arrangements and the party was ready to start! There were old-school games like coconut shies, hook-a-duck, apple bobbing, craft making etc, and all were provided free for the children and there was even an adult egg-and-spoon race!

There was a Grand Raffle with some amazing prizes from generous donors and also a Tombola stall with winnings for all ages. Whilst the music played, everyone enjoyed their picnics and after the cake competition judging was over, tea and cake were provided in the Cricket Pavilion.

There were imaginative Scenes of London scape with a photo/selfie zone with King Charles and Queen Camilla, with a side attraction of the late Queen Elizabeth. It was very popular!

From 6pm a disco had many people dancing on the grass and hot food was available from our own village pizza company as well as a fish and chip van, providing for all tastes and budgets.

Meanwhile, with a rota of volunteers, the bar was running a good trade serving Sussex Ale from our local brewery, Kissingate, and a selection of wines and soft drinks

On Monday morning an army of 20 volunteers arrived to dismantle the marquees and clear up! Thanks must go to so many. None of the above would have been possible without the willing volunteers who helped physically or garnered raffle prizes, ran the Raffle and Tombola, the children’s activities, helped with the tea and cakes, ticketing, First Aid, marshalling etc. which shows what can be achieved when the community comes together. For some, this was their third Royal Coronation, for some their first, but all who were there will remember the day.
